“Retaining Walls May Look Simple — But Getting Them Right Isn’t”

1. Poor Base Preparation

A retaining wall is only as strong as its base. Skipping proper excavation, leveling, and base compaction leads to shifting, leaning, or failure over time.

2. Lack of Proper Drainage

Water pressure behind the wall is a leading cause of failure. Without proper drain pipes and gravel backfill, water builds up and pushes the wall outward.

3. Using the Wrong Materials

Not all blocks or stones are suitable for retaining walls. Using garden edging blocks or low-quality materials can compromise the wall’s strength.

4. No Geogrid or Reinforcement

Walls over 3-4 feet often need geogrid reinforcement. Skipping this step can result in bulging or collapse under pressure from soil and water.

5. Not Accounting for Load Pressure

If there's a slope, driveway, or structure above the wall, that adds load pressure. Without proper engineering, the wall won’t hold up long-term.

6. Building Too Tall Without Permits or Engineering

Each city has height limits before requiring permits. DIY builders often go too high without knowing the legal or structural limits.

7. Incorrect Block Placement

Improperly staggered joints or slanted stacking reduces stability and strength. Each row needs to interlock and step back slightly ("batter").

8. Skipping Compaction Behind the Wall

If backfilled soil is not compacted properly, it will settle over time and cause drainage issues or structural stress on the wall.

9. Not Planning for Expansion or Movement

Natural ground movement, freeze-thaw cycles, and settling can shift the wall. Without proper design, cracks and leaning can occur.

10. DIY Without Experience

Retaining walls seem simple but require knowledge of soil pressure, drainage, elevation, and structural load. Many DIY walls fail within a few seasons.

At LandviewBC Landscaping Ltd., we’ve rebuilt plenty of failed DIY or underbuilt walls. We get it right the first time — so you don’t have to deal with expensive fixes later.
